We take our role seriously in presenting both iconic estates and “new generation” winemakers.
This estate is no exception, as the Jean-Marc Millot family estate in Nuits Saint Georges is now being managed by Alix Millot, Jean-Marc’s daughter.
On this 8 hectare estate, you will find Burgundy cuvées as well as Grand Crus. In fact they have a delightful and varied selection of appellations from some of the best vineyards in the Cote de Nuits area.
Jean-Marc produced high standard Burgundies, but Alix is taking it one step further. Her inspiration and energy have given the estate more ambition and has made it more forward-thinking, in line with the times. The quality has been improved over the years, but I think the last few vintages has taken quality to the next level, while maintaining the delicate style of the estate.
Alix has maintained the philosophy of low yields, quality vinification, including a long, cold maceration and ageing in lightly toasted Burgundy oak barrels. However she believes in tasting the wines regularly, which is something her fellow generational winemaking friends and colleagues do. She adapts her thinking to each individual barrel.
The result is wines driven by pure pinot fruit, transparent and thus expressing the terroirs beautifully. In the past the wines have been considered somewhat on the light side. But in recent years the concentration seems to have taken a notch up, hence adding more intensity and mid-palate weight. A part of this is most likely contributed by the effects of global warming.
We tasted the whole range of her wines: from la cuvée Bourgogne to villages Côte de Nuits Foulques, Savigny-Les-Beaune and Vosne-Romanée, to Premier Cru, Vosne-Romanée 1er Crus Suchots and finishing with Grands Crus, Clos Vougeot, Echézeaux, Echézeaux du Dessus and Grands Echézeaux.
An estate that was once considered under the radar…but not anymore.
