Jean-Luc Maldant runs a well-known 18 hectare winery in the Côte de Beaune and a few years ago imagined offering an end-of-year whisky gift to his faithful clients.
The project was ambitious and took three hard years of convincing a scotch whisky manufacturer to produce some whisky in Jean-Luc’s name.
The outcome is impressive. 3 whisky’s made in Scotland, using old barrels from Jean-Luc’s estate that contained his famous Corton’s. It took him several months to finally decide on the taste. He wanted to reflect his Burgundy roots and wine know-how, with whisky that has a long finish and plenty of body.
Jean-Luc has used 3 of Burgundy’s best known symbols: The Charolais cow, the Bresse chicken and the snail…
The “White Bresse” has a rich and concentrated nose, with hints of pear and candied lemon. It’s matured in chardonnay barrels.
The “Charolais Speyside” is matured in Corton barrels and offers a bouquet of mirabelle plums and ripe yellow fruit.
The “Black Malden” for connaisseurs is very peatty, salty and smokey. Jean-Luc’s family ancestor is Lord Malden, which gave him the idea of using this name.
Jean-Luc has bought 50hl which should allow him to produce about 10 000 bottles. He doesn’t aim to make a big profit from this, just share his passion with a few connaisseurs…
